Week 4: Medicine, Technology, & Art
My knowledge of medical technologies today is rather limited as I personally have only experienced X-rays, MRI's and particular machines that I have only seen. But after watching the lecture videos, I would conclude that I have more of a broadened view of the advancements in medical technologies over the past several hundred years.
While watching Professors Vesnas lecture video on this concept, it was interesting when she stated that "anatomy and dissection are at the intersection of art and science." I am still questioning that, as I do not fully comprehend. There is a wide array of things that incorporate both technology and art, but both work together to create one another, so to say. An article by the Medical Futurist discusses the most exciting medical technologies of 2017, and one in particular that goes hand in hand with the lecture videos is the "Narrow artificial intelligence" that has surfaced the United States clinics called "IBM Watson". This is an example of how much times have changed since hundreds of years ago without having ever discovered these technologies. Looking into the top 10 newest medical technologies of 2019, I came across "Robotic Surgeries', which is drastically advanced since the times of having to slice people by hand to perform such a procedure long ago. VR experience is also something that is being used and has been proven to aid patients not only with pain, but also to recover, and for students to learn.
Because technology in the industrial world plays a crucial role, the medical industry is one of the most important as it is saving and helping so many people. In an article from Healthcare Business and Technology, they state that "Medical technology is a broad field where innovation plays a crucial role in sustaining health. Areas like biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, information technology, the development of medical devices and equipment, and more have all made significant contributions to improving the health of people all around the world."
While there have been several advancements in medical innovations over the years, it does not stop today. There have been improvements with technology that have been proven better than other systems that aid with cancer treatment and other medical concerns. One I found interesting was the Melafind Optical scanner to cut back in melanoma biopsies. Innovation in the medical field is one that is huge and is benefiting the world as we speak!

Claire, I really liked your post! Super interesting when you mentioned robotic surgeries because that is crazy to think robots could potentially take over a profession that takes years of academia to accomplish. Great use of outside sources!
ReplyDeleteHey, I thought your post was super interesting. I have had a surgery once and it was performed by a robot like machine and I thought it as really cool to see your thoughts on the subject and imagine that I was affected by.
